What is Media Blasting?

Media blasting is powered by using water, compressed air, and media. The media is an abrasive element that will remove corrosion, paint, and other materials from surfaces. Using an air compressor, hoses and nozzles are hooked up to provide pressure to water and media. The hoses and nozzles are made of heavy-duty materials to help reduce wear and tear from the abrasive materials.

Using the highly pressurized water, media is blasted to the area which needs to be cleaned, restored, or remediated. The media particles are so small that the surface isn’t damaged, rather the contaminants are removed instead leaving the surface free of contaminants such as mold, lead paint or rust.

There are many different forms of media that can be used for the purpose of media blasting. Rock Environmental has access to numerous forms of media for abrasive blasting, however usually tends to stick to a select few. Listed below are the most common forms of media used by Rock Environmental.

Aluminum Oxide–Can be recycled and reused in multiple media blasting projects due to its hardness and durability.

Sodium Bicarbonate (baking soda)–This is a safe and effective method to remove virtually anything from a surface including paint, rust, and oil. The underlying surface does not get damaged when the media is used.

Hydroblasting–Does not use any abrasive materials, only high-powered water jets. Most know this as power-washing. This is a safe and effective way to remove stains from wood, or other organic materials like mold and fungus from surfaces. Additionally, the highly pressurized water can also be effective in removing paint from surfaces.

Recycled Glass–Using glass in either its crushed or glass bead form is effective against tough surfaces. The media can be used to clean, shape, and prepare the surface. Due to the hardness of glass, there is almost no dust or particles left behind, leaving you with a clean area afterward.

Shot Blasting–Using tiny steel pellets, the surface is left clean but with a texture that is preferred for future painting or restoration. This method is often used when something, like a car, is going to be repainted.

Walnut Shells–Walnut shells have been found to be a new alternative to using silica sand in sandblasting. This provides a safe and environmentally friendly way to remove paint and rust for surface preparation. Take note that walnut shells can cause an allergic reaction for those who are near the media blasting area.

There are other types of blasting media that can be used and some blasting techniques that work better than others on certain projects. Rock Environmental is available to assess the area you are looking to have restored, at this time the professionals can let you know which type of media will work best for you.
