Lead Paint

Lead-based paint is usually found in paint or a surface coating affixed to a component in or on a structure constructed prior to January 1, 1978.

A Lead Hazard is defined as deteriorated lead-based paint, lead contaminated dust, lead contaminated soil, disturbing lead-based paint or presumed lead-based paint without containment, or any other nuisance which may result in persistent and quantifiable lead exposure. Additionally, it dried faster and resisted moisture.

It wasn’t known until later that the lead was poisonous and caused children to become very sick. Further research was conducted, and the federal government banned lead-based paint for consumer use.

Lead isn’t only found in the paint for homes. It can also be found on old toys that were painted with lead paint, in the soil, weights at the gym, fishing sinkers, and more.

Many antique toys that have been passed down from generation to generation are likely to have once been painted with a form of lead-based paint.

What Are the Health Risks of Lead Paint?

Image

Lead paint, undisturbed, is not harmful. When the paint begins to chip, peel, or get dusty, it starts to pose a problem. Small children tend to find paint chips on window sills, railings, doorways, etc.

Often, children will begin to chew on surfaces that are their height when they start teething. Many windowsills are the perfect height for a toddler.

On average, the normal lead level in an adult is Less than ten micrograms per deciliter (µg/dL) or 0.48 micromoles per liter (µmol/L), and for a child, there must be Less than five µg/dL or 0.24 µmol/L of lead in the blood. Anything higher after a blood test needs to be monitored and possibly treated.

Lead poisoning and other health problems don’t just appear overnight. Lead poisoning is a slow, gradual process and can take months or years of exposure. There are signs and symptoms for those with increased lead levels in their blood.

Women who are pregnant and are exposed to lead paint are at risk for premature birth, low birth weight of their newborn, and the child having a slow or stunted growth process.

Parents should closely monitor children under the age of 6 for any symptoms, including developmental delays, learning difficulties, appetite, weight changes, feeling tired, abdominal pain, and seizures.

If your child has previously been diagnosed with Pica (a disorder that includes eating things that are not food like paint chips, chalk, or other non-food items), then you should closely monitor your child for these symptoms.

The symptoms in adults might be harder to recognize due to how common some symptoms are. But be mindful of joint and muscle pain (unrelated to exercise, injury, or age), headaches, abdominal pain, memory and concentration issues, high blood pressure, and mood disorders.

For adults, it is also essential to keep in mind the risks when trying to reproduce. Lead poisoning can cause reproductive issues in both men and women.

These are not the only symptoms and signs of lead poisoning. Others that can be more severe include organ damage, nerve damage, and other neurological disorders. Contact your physician if you or your child are experiencing any of the above symptoms.

Lead Paint Removal and Inspection

Lead Paint Removal Rochester NY

Since removing lead paint has been rendered an imperative by the EPA,  Rock Environmental professionals have all been certified to provide lead paint removal safely and effectively. Our extensive experience, range of methods & equipment, and knowledge of pertinent regulations have allowed us to excel in this service.

Once you have called Rock Environmental over lead paint concerns, our team will arrive at your home or business and start with a visual inspection of the area. Since paint with lead can be smelled, we must look at key identifiers.

Is it peeling? Is it chipping? We look for these features in specific home areas such as window sills, doorways, floor-around windows, and railings.

Other options don’t involve as many inspections, and these are assessments and screens. A risk assessment will include samples of the area with chipping or peeling paint. If something is chewed on, there would be a piece collected. Sites that are not of concern are not checked.

A hazard screen is even less and only involves one sample of lead dust from a window sill and one dust sample on the floor. All samples are sent out to independent laboratories for further evaluation. We will work with you on a safe and effective plan for lead paint abatement in your home if the results have been returned.

Our safe plans include wet sanding to prevent lead dust and lead paint chips from spreading throughout the home. If your home was built before 1978, most of the painted surfaces likely contain lead paint. It is essential to be mindful of these areas during home improvements to not disrupt the surfaces. We can offer a lead-safe alternative and repaint the affected surfaces once the lead paint has been removed.
