What is Asbestos and Why is it Harmful?

There is no known safe level of asbestos exposure and is estimated to claim the lives of 10,000 people annually. Classified as a human carcinogen (cancer-causing agent), asbestos refers to a group of six types of naturally occurring minerals that are composed of durable fibers (18,000 times thinner than human hair) which are resistant to heat and many chemicals.

Materials containing asbestos fibers can be disrupted during renovations or unplanned disasters and may release microscopic fibers into the air. When inhaled, these fine particulates can become trapped in the lung tissue causing inflammation and scarring that can lead to lung damage.

The three major health problems associated with asbestos exposure are lung cancer, mesothelioma, rare cancer found in the thin lining around the lung, chest, heart, and abdomen, and asbestosis, a progressive, degenerative disease of the lungs. Symptoms of asbestos poisoning can include shortness of breath, persistent dry cough, and chest tightness.

Where is Asbestos Hiding?

If your home was built or renovated before 1990, you may be surprised where asbestos products have been used in your home.

Products made from bonded asbestos cement that may have been used in your home include:

  • Fibro sheeting (flat and corrugated) in walls and ceilings
  • Water drainage and flue pipes
  • Roofing shingles and guttering
  • The backing of floor coverings

Asbestos can still be found in building materials imported into the United States, including insulation, flooring, textured paint, ceiling, and roof tiles. The EPA’s National Survey of Asbestos-Containing Friable Materials Final Report concluded that asbestos-containing pipe or boiler insulation had an average asbestos content of 70% and sprayed or trowelled-on friable asbestos material for insulation and fireproofing had an average asbestos content of 14%. The agency reported 192,000 buildings to contain these materials.
